Please join me in welcoming The Asylum’s latest addition!
This tiny baby rat was found abandoned in a compost heap…he is less than two weeks old, and so has not yet opened his eyes. Still, his dignified carriage shows him to be ratty royalty, and he has been dubbed Lord Bertram (Bertie to his friends). Let’s watch him grow together! This was actually the very first time I ever saw him scratch himself…a very useful skill. This was a wonderful moment to witness…real ratty behavior began this day.
Notes on raising baby ratties: If you should ever find an abandoned baby rat, DO try and save her or him, or find someone who can (raising a tiny bay ratty is a full time job, but incredibly fulfilling as rats are beautiful spirits filled with gentle affection and loving lessons to share). Rat rescues do exist, and the magical internets are here to help you. I’m keeping Bertie in a very secure box with adequate ventilation, with a heating pad beneath one half of the box, keeping his body temperature at 100-102 degrees F. This is crucial as he cannot yet regulate his own body temperature. Bertie is fed human infant soy formula from a plastic eye dropper every two hours. It’s a messy job, but necessary until he’s had his eyes open a few days at least when he ought to be able to drink from a tiny saucer.
Rats aren’t creepy. Experimenting on them is.

Big shout out to the Dougal Dixon fandom. It is all speculation, but it’s science fiction. What did you expect? Dougal still makes such beautiful creatures even if they aren’t scientifically plausible
Zoology of the Future is out of print in North America, but eBay did have a copy. However, I’d say Future is Wild is overall better. The science is more up to date, there are fewer creatures making it more coherent, and it has the Megasquid in it. You’re argument is invalid. I never watched the cartoon; I heard it was terrible.
Maybe I’ll just make a collage of all the things I DIDN’T get into because of Tumblr.
